Unions allege exploitation at BPO’s

Unions allege women workers at BPO’s are given contraceptive powders mixed with food to prevent pregnancies or long maternity leave and therefore would save cost to the Management!!

These allegations came from none other than Communist Party of India MP and All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) general secretary Gurudas Dasgupta. He referred to such complaints coming from BPO centers in Chennai, Delhi and Bangalore. He also added that there were also other complaints of long working hours of upto 12 hours in a day without rest and their nature of work contributing to ailments like neck pain, headache and other bodily discomforts.

The Unions have managed to make inroads to some BPO’s in Bangalore and Kolkata but have failed to get aggressive in Unionizing the BPO workforce since the Managements of the BPO’s have fallen strong on the employees who even dared think of such an attempt to Unionize.

While it could be a case of the Unions trying to spread their tentacles by creating a need for their existence, but the allegations cannot be brushed off so easily. It is know of hardships at BPO’s, so the present allegations may serve as a caution to the Management.
